Artificial intelligence has been making huge progress recently - and that means we have to talk about ethics! As AI gets more advanced, we need to make sure it's developed safely and for good. AI has the potential to improve our lives in so many ways. But it also brings risks and challenges we have to address as this technology continues to get smarter and more capable.  When we develop AI without caring about ethics, it can negatively impact groups, discriminate unfairly, disrupt jobs, invade privacy - and even manipulate or deceive people. 😞 😠 😑   Not cool! The progress in AI recently has been AMAZING - but also alarming without care for ethics.  This post aims to point out problems with the status quo, make that case for changing it, and give practical ways anyone can be part of positive change! Sources of Unfair Bias and Lack of Transparency in AI

So how exactly does bias and unfairness creep into AI? The main reasons are:

πŸ€–AI reflects whatever data is used to train it. If the datasets reflect unfair social biases, the models learn and amplify those biases. Most datasets today reflect major gaps and skew male, white, Western, and cisgendered.  So AI models can end up disadvantageous or discriminatory towards minorities and marginalized groups. 😞

✨Lack of diversity and inclusion. The AI field suffers from a lack of diversity. The people building the algorithms and datasets are typically similar, and that narrow set of perspectives gets embedded into systems. Facial recognition (FR) technology has major issues with unfairness toward women and minorities. 😞 Many studies show FR models have higher error rates for these groups, especially women of color. Significant real-world harm is already resulting:

While FR has exciting uses when thoughtfully developed, the status quo is unacceptable discrimination that reflects "coded gaze" - the tendency to overlook marginalized groups in tech design.  Addressing inequity in FR is crucial to prevent harm at scale. πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš–οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€βš–οΈ Some steps forward:

➑️Prioritizing inclusion and evaluating for fairness, not just accuracy.

By caring about who benefits and who's disadvantaged in how we build AI, we can do so much better at creating technology that serves and includes all of humanity. AI-based risk assessment tools are used in some justice systems to help determine things like bail amounts or parole decisions.  But many argue these systems reflect and amplify racial inequities. Examples:

The COMPAS system used to assess risk of recidivism in US courts has been accused of bias against African Americans, who were more often misclassified as high risk compared to whites.  πŸš¨  Studies found the algorithm more likely to falsely label black defendants as future criminals.

A 2021 study found many machine learning models trained on New York City data showed significant racial disparities in how they assessed risk, due to biases in historical data. They did not actually predict recidivism, but rather, reflected systemic racism.  πŸ˜ž

Lack of transparency in how scores are calculated prevents scrutiny of risk assessment systems. It's unknown whether tools disproportionately disadvantage minorities or how deficits could be addressed.  Proprietary algorithms require blind trust in their fairness.  πŸ˜‘ πŸ•³

AI reflects the values of its developers. Achieving equity requires acknowledging uncomfortable truths about related social inequities and a willingness to act transparently at each step. Though difficult, building hiring tools grounded in counteracting discrimination and disadvantage can set better precedents for an ethical future of work. Other Examples of AI Unfairness

There are many other instances of AI reinforcing discrimination or disadvantaging marginalized groups:

Twitter's algorithmic image cropping tool was shown to favor images of younger, thinner and lighter faces compared to showing the full images. The system had learned a "male gaze" and "racial gaze" from its training data that reflected societal beauty standards. 😞

Analysis of chatbots and voice assistants found disproportionately female personas and names, conveying harmful gender stereotypes of women as servile or doting. The decision to gender technologies and AIs at all reflects bias. 😀

Word embeddings have been shown to reflect and spread offensive gender, race and cultural stereotypes through the associations they make between concepts. For example, word embeddings historically related "woman" most closely to arts and humanities roles, while "man" was linked to leadership and science. 🚨

Predictive policing tools have been found most likely to wrongly flag Black and ethnic minority neighborhoods as "high risk" due to relying on racially skewed historical crime data. This creates a harmful feedback loop reinforcing over-surveillance. ⚠️

The impacts of unfair AI range from harmful nuances that subtly yet negatively shape popular perceptions, to dangerous instances of systems incorrectly flagging or accusing individuals from marginalized groups. Addressing discrimination and bias in AI is crucial to prevent harm at scale as these technologies become increasingly integral in all areas of daily life and society. Achieving inclusive, ethical and trustworthy AI is a shared goal that requires identifying and counteracting disadvantage however it manifests - which can only happen by including and empowering a diverse range of voices in building, governing and advocating for equitable systems.
